Some letters born to be lucky. Z(ed) is one of them. Come on… We’re talking about logos. Be more optimistic. Lucky side of “Z” is it’s sometimes seems to be the same as 2 (two - the numeric character).
Now, think about the meaning of “2″. Yes, we already know it’s a number comes after one. When you take it’s meaning as “the second” in a numeral string for two, you may name it as “Alternative” too. Yes, this is the point of this post.
In a marketplace, if there are generic and -stronger than you- brands, you may like to position your brand as alternative of them and wait your turn. This point of view was experienced and succeeded. Look at “We try harder” slogan of Avis.
ZDF is a German TV channel - Zweites Deutsches Fernsehen (Second German Television). Ok. They are 2nd channel and and their brand beginning with a Z letter already. But when you look at their logo, you can see their above mentioned competitive pretention easily. Did somebody put forward this idea into their logo creation process? We don’t know obviously. The only thing we know is, it’s a good work. Look at that:

Good idea and technically perfect design. Beautifull too.

Why we are taking an artwork into a nonsense boundry? Short answer to this question is;”We do believe it sense”. For those who like longer answers keep reading.
In a Brands World, we always use some artworks (logos in our case) in our daily rutin as a graphic artist or designer. Sometimes we create new ones and provide them as a gift (againts a satisfied invoice) to the world, but mostly we use the ones created by the others. Again, in most situations, we even don’t know the artist who made it first place but these materials arrive us from different sources alongside of the ones from the PR departments.
For sure, each designer uses their very own working environment. Personal preferences and habits breeds thousands of possibilities on final outputs. Different kind of working spaces from various designing softwares are common ways to create such works.
But when we get them to our own workflow, as we are designing our creation process, we are forced to include and mix the otherones techniques into ours. We try to understand their way of thinking to merge different sources into the new ones we are working on.

This is brands world. So we’d like to talk about them. Not about their presence or contents but about their way of presentation. And, mostly about their shapes, colors and power or weakness.
